How important are keywords in Search Engine Optimization trends of 2018?

When I started writing blogs and articles back in 2015, I almost lost a client because of not being able to manage the keyword density in my article. That made me curious to keep a check on it every now and then to get my answer; how important are keywords for SEO in 2018? I did my detailed research, read a lot of articles and trends in SEO and at last, came up this blog.

Let’s start with some history about the keywords. If we talk about 2011, we would come to know that there was a hype of keywords. A lot of SEO masters, bloggers and content creators used keywords density as an SEO tool for indexing their websites on Google Search. Writers used them to stuff their websites. At the same time, spammers appeared on the screen with irrelevant content and a high number of keywords in their content. So, this troubled a lot of websites who were providing quality content but due to the spam could not be indexed by Google.

If you’re looking for keyword stuffing example or how it was used earlier it cannot be more perfectly explained by this picture from Neil Patel’s article.

According to the latest reports on SEO, it was found that a total of 18% pages that are top-ranked do not have keywords stuffing. Now a question might pop up in your mind, does that mean keywords density is no more a part of search engine optimization? Well, actually we cannot say that completely because rest of the 82% of the web pages still used it to get ranked.

The Hummingbird update in Google Algorithm has turned the world of keywords upside down. Now that algorithm is totally based on the quality of your content, how authentic and relevant your material is! This update forced many of the SEO experts to change their way of marketing and to provide the content that matches to the user queries. That means there would be no place for forced keywords in SEO anymore.

If we dig a little deeper in the authenticity we’ll find out that by authenticity I mean, your blog or website is not a spam or just a page with a wrong ratio of ads to content ratio, and you have authentic privacy policies and your website is not a fake identity on the internet to trap people. And of course, relevancy means related content not merely stuffing keywords to ultimately irritate the visitors.
Well, it is a better option to use keywords in your title, Meta description, and body to get indexed instead of just spamming around your blog.

To add more to your knowledge most of the websites in Pakistan especially are made on WordPress because of its ease of use. So talking about SEO in WordPress sites, a very popular plugin is used namely, YOAST SEO that allows you to use your keywords in site title, Meta description, and body of your page.

Tools for checking keywords density

Now the question might arise in your mind that how would know that the keyword you have chosen for your page has high density or in simple words popular across Google Search. For that, the first approach is to write your keyword in the search bar of Google and note the suggestions that appear in the drop-down.

And a second approach it is to use a tool for getting the density. Most of the tools are free and some of them provide limited suggestions. Here are a few to assist you in SEO guide.

Neil Patel is considered the guru of SEO, he has written a lot about SEO and content marketing. His website now provides a free tool, namely Uber Suggest 2.0  to suggest keywords.

Another tool for your rescue is MOZ that started off in 2004 as a platform for SEO experts to share their experiences.

The good thing about these SEO tools is that it provides the feature to check its popularity in your particular region which helps you to know what is popular in your area.

Conclusion

In the end, I would summarize this as:
§  Don’t spam your blog with keywords
§  Write quality content with relevancy
§  Use tools to optimize your keywords
§  Wisely place your keywords in the content

I hope that would help you somehow. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions related to the topic. I’ll be more than happy to answer them.
