How to optimize your website speed time?

Why we need to optimize our websites?

optimize websiteWe usually spend much of our time improving the design features of our website but forget about its speed! I have seen many sleek websites with high bounce rate only because of the fact that they ignored the factor of website loading time. By ‘Bounce Rate’, I mean the number of visitors who leave your site because of poor loading time. The higher the bounce rate, the more negative impact of your website.

We all know when we start an online business, we want to make our identity on the internet for that websites are developed, and if we want to attract our customers or visitors to our site the very first thing we should consider is the website loading time. Because in this current era everyone wants things to be fast, so why make your website slow?

Would you believe that 40% of the audience leaves the website if it takes more than three or more seconds to load! That means 40% of your customers will not buy your products or services because of load time and that my friend is a huge loss for any company! It’ll ultimately generate less revenue. Plus, it also affects your search rankings in Google.

What are the causes of slow speed?
Well, there are can be many reasons that your website is taking time to load. Some of them are listed below:

Hosting Server and Web Hosting Plan can be one of the top reasons why your website is slow.  What if we have to choose a server that provides us with cheap hosting plans but has a high downtime? That means your server will be down most of the time and let’s assume at exactly the same time you have visitors on your site, this is going to cast a negative impact and there will be no use of your best UX/UI design or innovative product that you are selling. So, choose wisely! Sometimes it’s not the server but the hosting plan you have selected, that cause hindrance in loading because that is not up to your requirements. So make sure you choose a plan that best suits your requirements and is fast and reliable.

What are the tools for testing my website?
Pingdom is one the most reliable source of testing the speed of the website. It allows you to test your site’s speed in your specific area. After you test the site, it gives you recommendations on what should be done.

GTMetrix is a very useful tool because not only it gives you speed time of your website but also the suggestions. And if you have a little insight of tech you will understand them. It is a more reliable source as compared to Pingdom.

How to optimize the speed?

Page loading time is an important factor in WordPress Optimization. Since most of the business owners use WordPress as a CMS so I am going to explain here the ways to optimize the page speed of a WordPress website.

Good Hosting Service Provider
As we have discussed earlier the reason for high load time is not having proper insights of a good hosting server and good hosting plan. So, first of all, pen it down which is the best hosting service provider in your area. For that maybe ask your friends around who have already bought a server for their website or you can ask about it in reliable Facebook Groups where people help each other in solving queries. Then note the requirements of your website and judge which hosting plan will suit your needs or most of the hosting providers have live chat option or customer service number you can directly contact them and ask for a better option.

Keep your theme and plugins updated

The next step you should be doing is keeping your plugins and theme updated. The reason I am saying to update the theme or plugins is that the new update keeps the website safe. Plus, the new updates provides fast loading time. Because whenever there is a new update that means developers have successfully accomplished the new goals of optimization and a more secure website.

Minify the CSS and JavaScript

The third step to mention here is minifying CSS and JavaScript. That means whenever someone loads your website the HTTP Request is made to access those files by the computer and server sends it back. The more the HTTP Requests, the slower is the website. So, if you struggled to see the loading time of your website through GTMetrix, you might have noticed this thing in its recommendations as HTTP Requests. One of the reasons for minifying CSS and JavaScript is that most of the time human write readable code for his ease but the computer, on the other hand, do not worry about readability so all of those white spaces used for making your code appear good are nothing but just waste of memory and time. So, for that purpose, there are a lot of plugins used that compress the code and optimize the speed of the website. Here are a few plugins to mention WP Minify or W3 Total Cache or BWP Minify that make wordpress speed faster.

Optimized Images

Most of the time we do not bother about the type of images we use for our website, but IT DOES MATTER! One of the best ways to use the optimized images is to do it from Photoshop. After you are done with the image Go to the File > Save for Web & Devices or hit Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S (Windows) or Cmd + Opt + Shift + S (Mac) to optimize your image for web.
The jpeg format of images is recommended most of the time because of its compressed version or we can say the reduced file size. I once experienced this myself I was using PNG format of images for my website, after development phase when I start testing it I found out that the images were loading late and hence the overall impact of the website was affected. So, I converted them in jpeg format and used them instead and I could see a clear difference. That was my kick for using the jpeg format. PNG format is usually recommended when the image has 1 or 2 colors.

Do not upload your videos in your Media Library
The reason I am recommending to not directly upload your videos to your WordPress Media Library is that it will save your server from loading it if you have used a YouTube or Vimeo link.

Conclusion
These were the few recommendations that can help you to make your website load faster ultimately casting a good impression to your visitors.
